Early Earth zircons formed in residual granitic melts produced by tonalite differentiation

چکیده

Abstract The oldest geological materials on Earth are Hadean (>4 Ga) detrital zircon grains. Their chemistry and apparently low Ti-in-zircon temperatures (?700 °C) considered to be inconsistent with crystallization in a magma of the tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) suite, although these dominant Archean (4.0–2.5 silicic rocks. Using new data set trace element contents zircons from Paleoarchean Barberton TTGs (South Africa) thermodynamic modeling, we show that have crystallized at near-solidus conditions compositionally uniform granitic melt. This melt is residual less evolved (tonalitic) parent thereby shows major compositions different bulk TTG A global compilation reveals most TTG-hosted grains share peculiar signature distinct chemical trends defined by Phanerozoic zircons. Our model Ti early reflect higher (720–800 than initially inferred due lower modeled TiO2 activity relative previous estimates. We therefore propose chemically TTG-like magmatic environment was zircon-forming process Earth.

Nd EVIDENCE FOR EARLY EARTH DIFFERENTIATION

It is widely accepted that the lunar mantle went through a stage of generalized melting, the so-called magma ocean, which gave rise to the radial minera-logical layering of the planet. Similar evidence is totally missing on Earth for which no remnants of a very early crust are known and mostly indirect arguments. Because of the large Earth's radius, the amount of energy liberated by impactors a...

Temperature effect on compression and collapsibility of residual granitic soil

This research aims to investigate the effect of temperature changes on the compression index and collapse potential of the residual granitic soil that is widely encountered in Malaysia. An experimental study was conducted on the compacted soil using a modified temperaturecontrolled oedometer. Temperatures of 27, 40, and 60 oC were applied on two series of soil specimens with different values of...

Experimental strategies for the investigation of low temperature properties in granitic and pegmatitic melts

The physical behavior of silicate melts during the final stages of intrusion in the earth's crust are poorly understood. In particular, the low temperature limit of igneous petrogenesis is poorly constrained. The extreme differentiates of granitic magmatism that lead to pegmatite genesis span a very large range of composition not normally considered to be within the domain of igneous melt compo...

Early differentiation of the Earth and the Moon.

We examine the implications of new 182W and 142Nd data for Mars and the Moon for the early evolution of the Earth. The similarity of 182W in the terrestrial and lunar mantles and their apparently differing Hf/W ratios indicate that the Moon-forming giant impact most probably took place more than 60Ma after the formation of calcium-aluminium-rich inclusions (4.568Gyr). This is not inconsistent w...

Coupled 182W-142Nd constraint for early Earth differentiation.

Recent high precision (142)Nd isotope measurements showed that global silicate differentiation may have occurred as early as 30-75 Myr after the Solar System formation [Bennett V, et al. (2007) Science 318:1907-1910]. This time scale is almost contemporaneous with Earth's core formation at approximately 30 Myr [Yin Q, et al. (2002) Nature 418:949-952]. The (182)Hf-(182)W system provides a power...
